BLACK LIGHT (texto corto) ▼
2007 The project “Schwarzlicht” (Black Light) was carried out as part of the TEMPS art residency in Berlin. It was based on and dedicated to the postcolonial thought of Frantz Fanon (1925–1961).
During the residency, Ballón read Fanon’s books and writings as well as critical analyses of his thought. The residency space was gradually transformed as Fanon’s postcolonial ideas entered into dialogue with the artist. The materials through which this plastic appropriation of space was expressed included a white wool mask, black light drawings on carbon paper sheets, black light neon tubes, and plaster molds.
This process of subjectivation resulted in two site-specific installations—“Schwarzlicht” (Black Light) and “Le passage de la conscience” (The Passage of Consciousness)—and two actions—“Déconstruction sociale” (Social Deconstruction) and “Matrix”—presented at the opening and documented in two videos.
