2013-2025 The Red Carpet is the symbol of a movement of ongoing struggle for women’s rights that began in Lima, Peru. Beyond geographic borders, it has also taken place in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, Honduras, Spain, Switzerland, England, Australia, and the United States. It is a struggle for equality and non-discrimination. We want to change the living conditions in which women, girls, and adolescents in poverty—particularly in urban-marginal and rural areas—are subjected on a daily basis.

A red carpet is traditionally used to mark the path taken by heads of state on ceremonial and formal occasions. In the current context, where the presidency and the congress of the republic trample on the fundamental rights of women and the LTGBIQ+ community, the use of red (the color of the national flag) in the bodies lying down—forming a Red Carpet that intervenes in public space—seeks to resemanticize this image and give it a meaning of protest. In fact, the Red Carpet, spread across diverse governmental public spaces and made up of the bodies of an organized civil society, demands a new path from the heads of state regarding sexual and reproductive rights.

The use of red (the color of national symbols, blood, love, violence, and passion) also seeks to draw attention to the consequences that the denial of sexual, reproductive, labor, and cultural rights has on the lives of women. These include, for example: higher maternal mortality rates due to unsafe abortions; the increase in femicides and transfemicides; lack of access to justice; forced sterilizations of Indigenous, Native, and women descended from First Peoples; extortion payments demanded by the National Police (PNP) and international mafias from sex workers; the rise in cases of disappearances, human trafficking, and sexual violence—especially against minors—among others.
